City officials this week will celebrate the opening of a new ballfield complex at Kessler Mountain Regional Park in southwest Fayetteville.

The event is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12.

Speakers will include Mayor Lioneld Jordan, along with Alison Jumper and Ted Jack from the Parks, Natural Resources and Cultural Affairs Department. Fayetteville Youth Baseball’s Michael Ferguson will also say a few words.

Immediately following the ceremony, Mayor Jordan will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at one of the games scheduled on the new fields.

Fayetteville voters in 2019 approved a $26.4 million parks bond issue that included $7.8 million for improvements at Kessler park. Those improvements included adding four new baseball fields with synthetic-turf infields, as well as new concessions, a restroom facility, batting cages and additional parking. It also paid for installation of new synthetic turf on the existing four infields.

Officials said synthetic turf will increase the usability of the fields, reducing rainouts and daily maintenance while providing more consistent playability for participants.
