Weeklong closure planned on Wilson Avenue for crosswalk installation

A portion of Wilson Avenue will be closed for about a week beginning Monday, July 18 while crews work to install a new crosswalk at the northwest edge of Wilson Park.

The road closure is between Prospect Street and Louise Street, and is needed to allow for excavation, forming, pouring and curing of the new concrete crosswalk. Detour signs will direct traffic around the park until the construction is completed, according to a news release.

The road is expected to reopen by Monday, July 25.

The work is part of a project to create a bikeway connector between the Razorback Greenway and Mission Boulevard.

The 1.1-mile bikeway includes Park Avenue, Trenton Boulevard, Prospect Street and Rebecca Street, all of which will see improvements in the coming months, including widening of the sidewalk on Prospect Street to a 10-foot side path. The remaining portions of the route will include shared bike-lane markings.

Construction of an on-street bike route was recently completed on Trenton Boulevard, which included a new crosswalk that connects to Wilson Park.

The city was awarded a $385,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation to put toward the cost of the new bikeway connector. The remaining funds needed to complete the project come from the trail improvement bonds that voters approved in 2019.
